In Waste-to-Energy (WTE), Dryclone®, Drying system, Dryclone, Coal replacement

One of the most effective ways for developing countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions is to divert municipal solid waste (MSW) from landfill. When the organic material in MSW decomposes it creates methane, a greenhouse gas. Diverting MSW from landfill means that the methane from decomposing organics in landfill is eliminated and greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced.

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) later this year will bring together the countries who are parties to the Paris Agreement. These countries have Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

In order to reach these commitments, it’s likely that countries will need to reduce or eliminate their reliance on coal. They’ll also likely need more baseload quality renewable power generation in addition to intermittent wind and solar.

Dryclone® DSRF plants

Dryclone Drying System

Diverting the entire MSW stream from landfill has been a challenge up to now. There needs to be an economically viable use for the wet organic content and contaminated materials that can’t be recycled. Dryclone® Solid Recovered Fuel (DSRF) plants solve this problem by creating a clean, renewable fuel for coal replacement or energy recovery from the entire MSW stream (except for metals and inerts). DSRF has the same energy content as coal. It can be used in existing cement plants, power stations, and brick kilns.

In countries where there’s a pressing need for electricity rather than coal replacement, DSRF plants can be equipped with gasification and turbine genset stages to generate baseload quality renewable power.

How it works

Dryclone DSRF including organic waste

The Dryclone Drying System takes the entire MSW stream including organic waste (except for metals and inerts) and produces high-quality Dryclone Solid Recovered Fuel (DSRF). Before Dryclone, conventional SRF plants couldn’t accept wet organic waste. This is now possible thanks to Dryclone’s unique aerodynamic pulverization and energy-efficient drying. The result: MSW is completely eliminated from landfill and roadside dumping.
